Radio News Magazine, June, 1947

The caption for this cover photo reads:

A portable adds vacation enjoyment whether traveling on the "Queen Elizabeth" or by bus. This Lewyt portable is housed in a plastic case. with special easy-carrying handle.

Early tube portables were about the size of an overnight case and were often covered with a luggage fabric. See our RCA 94BP1 from 1939 and Zenith 6G601M from 1947. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, new tubes with lower power requirements allowed smaller portables to be developed. See the Tube Portable section of our gallery.

The famous Zenith TransOceanic was a much higher-powered (and higher-priced!) portable of the same era.
