Zenith Model 1000 TransOceanic Transistor Portable (1962)

Next

This is my second model 1000 TransOceanic. It's in somewhat worse shape than my first one, showing evidence of storage in a very humid place. Some of the gunk inside (happily, not visible in this photo) will clean up pretty easily. But the chrome and steel plating has pitted here and there. And the cylindrical dial has wrinkled and buckled in places, almost as if the set spent some time under water.

It's a testament to TransOceanic durability that this set plays at all—but it does! After some cautious testing and a little cleanup, I hooked up a battery pack, expecting nothing at all. I was rewarded with music, at least on the AM band, but it won't sound good until I go in and clean up the scratchy controls.

Inside, this radio looks identical to my other model 1000 (except it's a little dirtier!), so I skipped the internal view.
