Radio News Miraco Ad: Feb. 1929

The back cover ad for February, 1929 Radio News magazine features the Miraco eight-tube radio. For a mere $49.95, you could buy this "super-powered hum-free" set on a 30-day money-back guarantee.

This set featured one-dial tuning, a big advance over earlier sets which required the listener to fiddle with as many as three pesky dials. It was available in an eight-tube configuration for battery or battery-eliminator use, or in a nine-tube configuration for AC-only operation.

Miraco was an early name for Midwest Radio Corporation. Midwest never achieved the prominence of a Philco or RCA, but they bragged of nine years experience in radio manufacturing in this 1929 ad. The company thrived through the late 1940s, offering a range of receivers that included highly-styled consoles with as many as 18 tubes.

The following photo shows my Midwest DD-18 console.
